RECOLLECTIONS FOR THE FUTURE

This blog thing is neat! Maybe in a couple years I will look back at this blog and reminisce about these days. This semester is 5 days away from wrapping up so I have got to hold on just a little longer. I have learned a lot from my classes and how to survive my classes. This year was really busy for me. I learned to manage my time better and found some more intrinsic motivation to really step up with my grades. Usually the first semester of the school year is always harder so I am going into the second semester confident. With my writing in this class I have learned a lot. With using literary devices and doing a pre-write for my essay. Analyzing a poem or an essay is actually fun. The worl to come next semester and the prepping for AP tests should be fun.

SOME KETCHUP WORK

I never posted my presentation notes because really I should have just typed them. I took the best notes I could so don't judge me or my penmanship.

SOMETHING INTERESTING

I hate time. Time just seems to ebb on by with no concern of others. We can only live our lives by going by and reminiscing about the past. It sucks but when we look back a couple of years we see how great it was but back then we did not know. These days I can only assume that all my days are going to be seen with deep nostalgia from me. I know when I am in college I will be thinking about the good old days of high school. The only cure for this is to be grateful now and just be happy about it later. I get nostalgic now and look back when I was in elementary and mess around with my cousins. My solution to that was I spend a lot of time with my cousins and every weekend we just have fun. Time sucks but we can't do anything about it.

A quote from one of my favorite shows.

JIMMY SANTIAGO

Today in class i analyzed the poem some more. I read Jessica's blog and i agreed with most of it but there were some things I didn't agree with.
TONE- The tone is very clear that at first he looks at the hopeful side of things. He sees that before coming here there is a lot of hope in people. In the end he has described us the harsh reality of what really happens.
THEME- The hard truth about the "opportunities" America has to offer.

MY MAD DREAM OF AN ESSAY

Remember that time you ate that spicy orange  just before you went to bed on the night before the big race?  Oh, that weird dream you had about the 2016 presidential election.  When you woke up you couldn't quite remember the excruciating details, but after reading "On Self-Reliance" and "A Sound of Thunder" it's all coming back to you now.

The dream started badly.  You were in line with your family at a farm waiting to be sent to rehab.  Everywhere you looked there were posters of president-elect Shrek, looking like a crazy wildebeest who could eat a whole bagel.

Suddenly, there was Ralph Waldo Emerson telling you,
"This conformity makes them not false in a few particulars, authors of a few lies, but false in all particulars."  You realized that you have something to contribute to the world so you decided to rap.  But it wasn't easy.  First you had to put on a fancy snap back and cane  and then you had make a gun to go back in time to the gazebo so you could convince people to learn about the candidates and the taxes on the rich..

But right there in the gazebo there was a giant troll and it started swinging at everyone.  People started to faint.  You grabbed a megaphone  from a nearby box and yelled time will always pass, it won't wait for you  .  Everyone stopped and listened, so you kept going.

People! Everything we do now is going to have an impact. You decide the outcome.  There is a thing called the butterfly effect where if you tamper with one small thing in the past the whole future will have changed. So who says the decisions you do now aren't changing the future dramatically. It only makes sense that all our interactions are changing everything that we will make of the future. Big changes like Donald Trump waking up one day and saying he will run for president. Maybe a huge change like in the story " A Sound of Thunder" where they travel back in time and Eckels changes one small thing but that changes the whole future, Eckels had killed a butterfly and that had an effect on the outcome of some things in the future. Ray Bradbury definitely used a butterfly to allude to the butterfly effect. The butterfly effect came from the idea that a flap of a butterfly's wings will have huge effect on the air and can change alot of things like possibilities of hurricane. You see what you do now is impacting the very nature around youso be more wary. Be more mindful of your choices. As Emerson would say be self reliant or be courageous. You also need to have the trust that your decisions are the right ones. Don't let others influence your decisions. It is kind of nice knowing what you do truly does affect things. So be impactful in the good ways that you can. You might not know it but you are making a difference.

MY BIG RACE

On Friday I had my big race. You can watch it here since this is the only race they have ever recorded of me. It was not a great race but I can say I didn't do that bad. Our over all team did good but not Division 1 good. We are in one of the hardest diviison in the nation! It sucks but that just means next year we have to come back stronger. VIGNETTE

When we were all lined up ready to race 3 miles it started to rain. Never have I raced in rain because we live in Southern California so this was special. All 100 or so of us runners were anxious to start this race. It seemed like a battleground, we were all lining up to go out and hunt each other. Since it was raining we had to stay warmed up so we were all jumping up and down like some sort of mosh pit. We were the last race of the day so everyone was on the sidelines ready to cheer us on. Right before the gun went off, I looked at the other runners and thought why shouldn't I try and beat them all? I put my game face on as I go out into the battleground that will be for the next 3 miles.

EMERSON'S CHILD

Be the person that makes you happy. Why else would Emerson push his message of self trust in his essay "Self Reliance". He wants you to show your personality not hide behind a veil of conformity. This is very clear and Emerson is very adamant about this message. You have to give it to Emerson, all he really wants is for the best of you so if you disagree with his message, he can care less. You can really take in what Emerson says however you want. But lets not forget that all he really wants is the best of you. To be the best of yourself is a challenge but to still want to be the best regardless of how society will see you is a greater challenge. You must conquer that  urge to fall in line with everybody else. Emerson explains why not conforming is so valuable in society. I can attest to that and many others can too but it is something easier said than done. Obviously not caring about what others think will be much better but to be aware of that and take action might be hard. Emerson guides us through this.
"Be yourself." To be yourself is to be love yourself for who you are. When you can be yourself it life seems much easier. When I am around close friends everything just seems much easier and comes at natural. When I am in a room full of strangers and I feel pressured to try to impress them, it is not the same. Emerson says "Man is his own star". He says this to point out how we as individuals are unique. We have to embrace the beauty of being ourselves. To be yourself is to be great. If you are seen as misunderstood it doesn't matter. Emerson says "To be great is to be misunderstood."
Look within yourself. The answer to your happiness might be within yourself. You shouldn't always seek the answer outside because it will influence you in ways that are not you. Emerson starts off the essay with "No te quaesiveris extra" which means "do not look outside yourself". By saying this in the first line he is establishing that you need to be self reliant on yourself.
Why should you listen to Emerson? I think to be self reliant and confident when you speak is very important in this society. To be happy with yourself speak out on the things that matter. In this society it is so easy to fall into conformity, almost like you are being lazy. You need to stand up and do your part in a society like this. That is your duty as a human being.
Whether you like it or not Emerson has a point he is trying to get across. He sees it as a persoanal need to be self reliant. Emerson would like it if we changed this society. He says " I hope in these days we have heard the last of conformity and consistency" He was hopeful back then, why can't we be hopeful today.

EMERSON SAID IT

"I am ashamed to think how easily we capitulate to badges and names, to large societies and dead institutions."

This is a good quote as it talks about how we conform to ideas we upheld to ourselves. Like if we are branded a captain, we might want to be seen as more serious. This one actually didn't come up in the socratic seminar we had but I wish it had. It shows the idea of how people get attached to these titles which shouldn't change who you are.

"This conformity makes them not false in a few particulars, authors of a few lies, but false in all particulars."

This quote hit me. Conformity is like a mask.  A mask that covers our true intentions. It doesn't allow others to see if what we say is sincere. This quote came up because I mentioned it since it had to relate to what we were saying. Conformity makes our intentions not as sincere and others get affected because of it.

The other terror that scares us from self-trust is our consistency; a reverence for our past act or word, because the eyes of others have no other data for computing our orbit than our past acts, and we are loath to disappoint them.

I think this quote is great. It tells us to not let the past control what we have to say now. It is okay to contradict yourself. I wanted to bring this quote up in class because it is important. To many times we think everyone actually keeps a record of what we have said but that is not the case. People are to busy caring about themselves to thin of what you have said or not.

I hope in these days we have heard the last of conformity and consistency.

I brought this quote up because they were talking about how much of an impact Emerson's essay has had. He was hopeful in that these social problems would be gone by today. It is the complete opposite. Leslie said all these efforts from Emerson are futile. No one takes this in. Society is society and we won't be able to change it. I don't agree. Obviously if we all make a conscious effort to change as a whole it can happen.

These roses under my window make no reference to former roses or to better ones; they are for what they are; they exist with God to-day. There is no time to them. There is simply the rose; it is perfect in every moment of its existence.

This quote seemed to come up because they were talking about how we need to be unique. There is a a value in not conforming to society.

AUTHOR IN PROGRESS

Well I think the first little test went okay. I do feel like I sometimes ramble on when I write. I will definitely try to fix that by writing a pre-write.  I did do a sort of pre-write in my heada. I always get a general outline of how I'm going to go about writing my response. I did understand the questions. But I didn't take advantage of the fact that the questions were posted a day before. My mind was preoccupied with other thoughts. ( Our team had our county meet that Thursday). I can probably improve on some things when I take my tests.

PSAT

Well the testing for 3 hours always sucks! Especially in the uncomfortable seats of the ethel pope. Since I took that test last year I could see if it was easier. It did feel easier and I understood more. The one good thing that comes out of the psat is the memes. Last year there was a ton of memes about the psat so I had that to look forward to. And this years were just as funny. Man the internet culture is cool.

Your American Voice

" Use your voice!" That is probably something I dread. I know using your voice is important so why is it still hard for me to speak up. I hate speaking up in  room full of strangers so that is one reason. I definitely feel safer speaking up on the internet where there is anonymity. Sometimes I see others speak up and looks like it comes naturally. See every now and then I will say something so perfectly it's like a scene out of a movie. One thing I should work on is knowing my audience. My opinion might feel more important if everyone agrees with them.
A major problem is also fear of backlash. I can say that it's intimidating when your in a group of people and you say something and everyone collectively looks at you as if you are stupid. Mostly I find speaking up an inconvenience. I am not going to lose by not speaking up. I do realize that if I do speak up and say something stupid everyone will forget about it.  I find that if I hear something that triggers emotions I usually don't think before I say something. Most people are like that so you see people that are aware of this and use their words as bait. Which is smart if you are speaking to a group of people.
Speaking in front of strangers is hard but speaking up for a friend not so much. When I see a friend getting talked down upon, it is only natural to go into defending mode. There is a sense of also feeling hurt when you see your friends getting hurt.  Speaking up about that comes natural and feels right. Now speaking up for stranger like when you see someone doing some illegal stuff is different. To speak up it involves reporting someone to someone else. In other words "snitching". So I personally don't really like to speak up on other people's business unless it is very serious. Wow speaking up is a real challenge.

TEAM VOCAB

This presidential election has transformed into a battle, with venomous attacks from both aggravating parties. Hillary has remained stolid, and I personally want to punch Trump in the proboscis. His supporters have slowly dissolved and the ones who have remained are hypnotized into believing America will be great again. We have to illuminate on the sad state of society right now. This is a melancholy moment in American history because soon one of these candidates will be president. Most of us feel Trump should be suspended from presidency after all his crude remarks. I earnestly believe that neither candidate should be eligible for office. We can all just be on the fringe of our seats and watch.

Essay 1 Revised

Look around you and what do you see? You see the truly unique people that make this life worth it all. You look at U.S.A and see the ethnically diverse people that make this great country. I can wholeheartedly agree with E.M Forster's view that personal relations are more important than causes or patriotism.  Personal relations are more emotional and involving than patriotism or causes. You can argue that maybe with patriotism many soldiers put their life on the line for this country but really they are doing it because of their family back home. Most personal relations trigger deep emotions and really show people their true side. Personal relations keep people motivated and alive also, it fuels the patriotism in a way.
Patriotism is something that Americans take to the heart but do they really? You see it everywhere in the Pledge of Allegiance or every neighborhood with their flag waving in the wind. I know well enough that what makes this country great is the connections with people. If it weren't for the personal relations, the soldiers fighting might not feel as motivated. Personal motivations show a special kind of intrinsic motivation. It allows  you to fight for those people and the connections you have with them. Patriotism is just a side effect of having those personal relations.
Personal relations are healthy. They allow you to live life with a purpose. You see people come back from war with Shell Shock because they put their life out there for their country. But when they have no one to come back to when it is all over, they think what is the point. Personal relations in a way fuel the patriotism in you. Most people can say they would take a bullet for their family but if it comes to it would you die for your country? Maybe to save your country means saving your family so really your protecting those personal relations.
Another point can be said that personal relations are always going to be there. They will never betray you and always be supportive. This patriotism on the other hand seems like it is always prohibiting you. The nation doesn't always help you , it actually makes it harder for you to be successful. The nation does offer free college if you join the army but look at the veterans of this nation. You see a lot of suicide among veterans and homelessness. So how did this patriotic country helped them. The veterans had no where else to go but to their country.
With all due respect to the hardcore patriots of this country, patriotism is just not the same without those personal relations. I agree with E.M Forster's view and you should to. It only makes sense that personal relations are the ones motivating you and showing what this nation is worth for. Thank your nation for housing those wonderful people.

TODAY I'M A GOOD HUMAN BEING.

Some of the cross country team.
So yesterday on Saturday we had a great workout.  It's always fun just working hard with my teammates. We all got Subway afterwards and took this photo. I guess I felt like a decent human being because I gave my friends a ride home after but I would never say no to them anyways. We're  always tired after the workout and I never mind giving them a ride.

On a side note, today we got a puppy! My first dog ever, hopefully he likes running.

MY YODA

My yoda to guide me through my big question would be Robin Williams. He has a lot of money and he was still sad. If I would still be able to talk to him I would ask him how he felt. He commited suicide when his life seemed pretty perfect. Robin seems like a very knowledgable man as well. Maybe he can give me tips to life. I think he would have the answers to a lot of my questions.

WHEN LOGIC FAILS

My ten favorite logical fallacies.

Ad hominem
He is really overweight and not attractive so do his opinions on child obesity even matter?

 Ad populum
The famous politician said "We should hand out money. Who here woudn't like free money?"

Ad antiquitatem
Citizens should have the access to weapons like they always have had.

Straw Man

Slippery Slope
Every parent is scared that if there child is even 5 feet around drugs, their child will start doing them.

Genetic
Alot of Americans think just because someone wears a burqa they are a terrorist.

Tu quoque
He was judging the other one for his harsh actions when the other came back at him with sonething the harsh avtions he has done.

Special Pleading
When his claims about global warming were debunked he said it would be better to test this in the summer.

Anecdotal
They said global warming didn't exist because there was snow on the ground.

Complex Question
He quickly interjected and said," Why haven't you paid your taxes?"

MISTAKES FOR PRESIDENT

Because of Time- It looks like plenty of things Trump wants to say keep some things the way he likes to the deal with guns

Ad hominem-Both presidents sometimes talk about their controversies instead of the main point.
Trump says Hilary does not have the stamina or looks to be president. He says  it takes more like make deals with nations.

appeal to popularity- Trump calls USA a third word country because we don't have great infrastructure and we are 20 trillion dollars in debt so he uses this to scare us.
Hilary says we need to keep guns out of the hands of everyone and to ensure more people are safe.
Hilary says we need to train more police officers and says this is a big issue. Right now police brutality is a talked about issue and Hilary is appealing to the audience.

The debate was interesting. I definitely don't know much about politics so my opinions are limited on how they handled the questions. I did notice that when they were asked a question, both kind of just talked about themselves or defended themselves which was interesting.

Big Question Revisit

My big question is why do people say money can't buy happiness. I mean I would think when you have all the money you would never be sad but from what I have learned this is not the case. What gives people happiness that money can't buy. I definitely feel like i have experienced this. When I bought my new iPhone I would think I can always be on it and be happy, but that is not the case. It is just another phone and I get bored of it too. I recently saw Narcos and when you would see Pablo Escobar with all the money in the world(and drugs!) , you wold think he could never be sad. Just like in the movie "Scarface", Tony is in his luxurious hot tub but he seems sad and not enjoying what I would imagine be living the life. It seems complicated .

Literature Analysis #1

Shadow of a Bull
1. My novel is about Manolo. He is the son of  famed bullfighter which passed away. Everyone has high expectations for Manolo but Manolo is unsure if he even wants to do this. Manolo trains for his first ever bull fight. when he is confronted about killing the bull as is tradition, he doesn't want to do it. Everyone is shocked ,but he shows them how foolish it is for them to determine his future
2. The theme of the novel is embracing your true self. Manolo always thought he was destined to be a bullfighter like his dad even though he didn't like it. He thought everyone would see him as a coward if he spoke out.
3. The author Maia Wojciechowska I feel lives a very exciting life filled with culture. She seems like the type of gal to wake up a drink some delicious mexican chocolate with some french croissant. She shows alot of appreciation to Spanish culture and knows her stuff about their pride with bullfighting. I feel like Maia watches a lot of different cultures and takes ideas from them. She probably wakes up very happy ready to learn new things. In this excerpt she writes," Then there are the torreristas...Some like the ones who look pretty in their traje de luces..." So this kind of shows her interest and some knowlege abput the spanish culture. This next excerpt "The town of Arcangel has both a soul and heart. Its soul is the bull ring, and its heart is the marketplace." She captures what a town in Spain would look like.
4. Imagery: The way he describes the passion of the bullfighters and how Manolo just doesn't have that passion. Manolo doesn't see it as a glamorous sport as the others see it. He sees other things with greater amazement. This excerpt shows this," As he watched the magic way the man's hands brought torn flesh together, he thought that what the doctor was doing and had done was the most noblest thing a man can do." For others they might think being a bullfighter like Manolo's dad was the most noblest thing. Now of course Manolo thinks his dad is a noble man but he doesnt see the sport as a noble one. He has interests in other places like when the doctor is stitching up an injury on a bullfighter.

I'M READING BIG BROTHER

Orwell compares 2 passages which say the same thing. He shows us how the good one contains 49 words and 60 syllables and the second one contains 38 words and 90 syllables. He says how it's easier to write this way because you're just  connecting long phrases that have already been connected. The words these people use show no emotional meaning which make it look like they don't care about the details of things. In political writing the writer writes as if he is some rebel expressing his private opinions. Political writing has to be made up of euphemisms because the reality is to harsh for some people. The words used are vague and sound less scary. People in politics can't outright agree with things such as "justification of murder from a government" so they'll mask their words with euphemisms.

Bad Words

Bad words are bad because we made them so. When a little kid hears a bad word they don't know anything different. When they say that bad word and we scold them for it , now they know it's a bad word. I think it's a good thing they know what the bad words are because now they know not to say them in the wrong situations. We made these words socially unacceptable. I think these words are essential to us because we need a way to express ourselves. To be able to make a more impact by saying "fuck" than "darn" is good.

Conscience of a Hacker

Since this was written in 1986 right when computers were coming around, a lot of people were kind of scared of them. The guy is saying how he is just curious to explore this new technology. He is bored of what they teach him at school so he just got curious. He is saying it isn't a crime to think like that. I think he is true to a certain extent. There is a line to cross when thinking about hacking and just tampering.

The Modest Proposal

This meets the satire criteria by talking about current events and making light of the situation. He takes it as he is very serious about this. He does all his "research" and comes up with the plans. He calls it a "modest" proposal to make it sound like he thinks it's reasonable. He even goes to say the mothers will benefit from this. It's really good satire.

EVERYTHING'S AMAZING

Louis CK does a great job at using satire to describe how some people don't have gratitude. He uses great examples that we can probably relate to and laugh along with. He says how a group of individuals should look at what there really doing and what humans have accomplished. He mocks them because they seem to take something that they have only had for several minutes already for granted. We should be more aware of our current living situations. He told us how it is witout sounding like a preachy old man.

Satire Examples

These are satire because they make fun of situations. They show the reality in some situations and how messed up it is. There is also some humor in it.

The Right To Your Opinion

I very much agree with what I read. It makes sense that people like saying "I'm entitled to my opinion" so they don't have to listen to others. By them saying that you know they are to stubborn to see other perspectives. If you can listen to other people's opinions without feeling hurt you are amazing. That is all we need in this world and it shows growth ad maturity. Those are my thoughts.
